About the BPI Exam

There are several BPI certification types available, including trade specific exams. The BPI Building Analyst certification focuses on building science fundamentals. Specifically, the Building Analyst written and field exams test your skills and knowledge relating to how to perform an energy audit. You need to master this subject matter before you can build on advanced certifications, such as Envelope or HVAC professional.

To become a BPI certified professional regardless of the specific designation, candidates must pass both a written examination and a practical field exam proctored by a BPI Affiliate. To pass the BPI field exams you need to score a minimum of 70% on the overall exam, and 85% on the combustion safety and carbon monoxide testing modules. Becoming a BPI Certified Professional will put you on the path to being a successful home energy auditor.

BPI Field Examination

During the BPI field exam, candidates have 2 hours to perform a typical home energy audit, including:

  • Worst case combustion safety testing
  • Setting up and running a blower door
  • Making prioritized recommendations regarding durability, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality for the home according to BPI standards.

Building Science Tech's Building Analyst Field Training Video: How to Perform a Home Energy Audit covers all the material you need to study to pass the BPI field exams. It serves as a visual refresher to classroom and field trainings. You can practice from home with your own equipment as you watch a complete home energy audit step-by-step. The Building Analyst Field Training Video comes with a detailed Data Collection Form which you can use during your actual BPI field exam.

BPI Continuing Education Requirements

Every BPI Professional must stay on top of their professional education, and must recertify every 3 years. If enough BPI CEUs have been earned, the BPI professional does not need to retake the written examination. The Building Analyst Field Training Video: How to Perform a Home Energy Audit qualifies BPI professionals for 1.5 CEUs.

Recertification can be completed three different ways:

  1. Complete and submit 30 hours of qualified continuing education and pass a field examination only for each designation
  2. Complete and submit 10 - 29 hours of qualified continuing education and pass a (50 question) written examination and field examination for each designation
  3. Complete and submit less than 10 hours of qualified continuing education and successfully pass a (100 question) written examination and a field examination for each designation
